i) This celebration was started to offer more supports and new opportunities to the girls in the country. It is celebrated to increase the awareness among people about all the inequalities faced by the girl child in the society.

2. Ex-PM of Thailand Yingluck Shinawatra was impeached by lawmakers.
i) Shinawatra was accused of making a huge loss to the country over a rice subsidy scheme. Under it, farmers were paid double the market price for their produce – in a bid to boost their incomes.
But it turned out to be a disaster, with huge stockpiles unsold in warehouses.
3. Saraswathi Menon was appointed in UN peace bulding architecture.
Indian sociologist Saraswathi Menon has vast experience in womens’ and development issue. She has been the director of the Policy Division of UN-Women, the UN body for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women, and the director of the UN Development Program’s Evaluation Office. Her other UNDP assignments included postings in Mongolia and Nepal.
4. Lee Wan Koo becomes the new Prime minister of South Korea.
6. Andreas Seppi defeated Federer.
Unseeded Andreas Seppi (Italy) defeated Federer by 6-4, 7-6 (5), 4-6, 7-6 (5) to oust him from the tournament. He hasn’t been beaten this early at the Australian Open since 2000. It was also the unseeded Seppi’s first win against Federer in 11 matches.
