Pravasi bharatiya divas 2015 began at Gujrat

The 13th edition of Pravasi Bharatiya Divas kicked off at Gandhinagar, Gujrat. External affairs minister Ms. Sushama Swaraj inaguarated the function by lighting the ceremonial lamp. Mr. Donald Ramotar, President of Guyana was the chief guest for this year’s event. The largest annual gathering of people from Indian diaspora will be held from 7th January to 9th January. It will mark the 100th year of Mahatma Gandhi’s return to India from South Africa. About 4,000 members of the Indian Diaspora from 60 countries, participating in the three-day event that began on Wednesday, are either non-resident Indians (NRIs) or people of Indian origin (PIOs). NRIs and PIOs, numbering 25 million and 7 million, respectively, spread over some 200 countries, have made India a global nation.

Facts on Pravasi Bharatiya Divas

The annual PBD, that began in 2003 under the Atal Behari Vajpayee-led NDA GovernmentPravasi bharatiya divas is observed on 9th of January every year. This day is celebrated to mark the achievements of overseas Indian community in development of India. The day January 9 is chosen since on the very same day Mahatma Gandhi returned from South Africa and led India’s freedom struggle.

Indian nationals are there in over 200 countries. They have taken India there with them PM Modi said at the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas 2015. People used to leave our country in pursuit of aspiration and opportunities. Those opportunities are present in India today. World is seeing India with immense hope and optimism. Everything can’t be measured in pounds or dollars. Our relationship with people of Indian origin is beyond that. There is one more issue that I am sure you are concerned about and that is the rejuvenation of Maa Ganga.
