National scene 4th January 2015
1. Delhi will be developed into a “Global city” and India’s first smart city.
Explanation –
i) The country’s smart city program will begin from the capital New Delhi. The DDA said delhi will also have smart amenieties. These include 24 hours power supply, water connection, sophisticated water storage and drainage system etc.
ii) This is a part of Prime minister Narendra Modi’s 100 smart cities program.
iii) The city Barcelona of Spain promised to provide technical assistance in this project.

2. KYC rules for NBFCs were relaxed by RBI.
Explanation –
i) KYC norms for NBFCs were eased by RBI on 2nd January 2015.
ii) Due to practical problems faced by NBFCs in obtaining KYC documents at frequent intervals. It has been classified into three categories. For high risk individuals and entities it is 2 years, for medium it is 8 years and low risk individuals and entites it is 10 years.
3. ICICI bank launched “Digital village” project in Gujrat.
Explanation –
i) ICICI bank adopted the whole Akodara village of Gujrat.
ii) Through this project ICICI bank will provide digitised banking services. The services include cashless banking, digitised school teaching etc.

4. Shyamala Gopinath was appointed chairperson of HDFC bank.
Explanation –
i) Ms Gopinath is a former deputy governer of RBI. She was appointed for a three year term.

i) World Braille Day is celebrated every year on 4th January to commemorate the birthday of Louis Braille.

6. Independence day of Myanmar observed today.
Explanation –
i) Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his greetings to the people of Myanmar on its independence day. Yesterday (4th January 2015) Myanmar marked its 67th independence day.
ii) Myanmar was declared its independence from British rule on 4th January 1948.
